Hey again everyone,

Hows it?!? Well our last part of Indo was definantly the best in my eyes. The boat trip was so funny, we had a really good crew of Aussies some Belgiums and a couple of Hawiians. We scored some really good days at Nusa lombongian a really good right there called shipwercks and a left and right peak called playgrounds. Then around to lombok to surf Desert Point and a walk through the jungle to Yo Yo's but it was too big for here. After the boat we went to stay in a place called Sanur and were surfing the sickest right ever called Keramas. I possibily had the best waves of my life!!!! Yep its true!!! This wave was amazing and we scored, as there was hardly anybody around. A local told me sometimes there can be upto 50people in the water!!!!! Nice!!!!! Back to crazy Kuta for our last couple of nights, met up with the Aussies off our boat who had just been to G-Land and partyed pretty hard on the 'Jungle Juice' i dont know whats in it but it works haha!!!!

We finally made it to Oz, after nearlly being stung $700 American for excess baggage (whoooops that would be my fault, it was just too cheap in Indo!!!). And then having to pay to get out of the country as we had over stayed our visas (whoooops again!!!!). But we are here now staying with my auntie Bernie in Blairgowrie Melbourne on the peninsular. We have had some good waves here too, there is a little right reef across the road from the house with the biggest kelp beds i have ever seen and a really good beach called 'Gunnamatta'. We were also lucky enough to see a massive whale swim pass before we got in the other morning. We have also been to the Telstra Dome to watch Ireland play the Aussie Wallabies in the rugby they didnt win but it was still a good game. Next on the agenda is to drive over to Phillip island to see the penguins and maybe surf at Bells beach depending on size!!!!!!

Right then we are off now to do some surf checking hope all is going well at home, i have some really good shots i will email them to you if you send me your email address......

lots of love to the rock shells and jimbo xx :) shells_mc@yahoo.co.uk

P.S I love my socks... haha thanks xx

Awesome Indo

Hello there!!!!

Well we are here and its amazing. The weather has been great, where we are staying is absoutely beautiful the views are amazing and the surf is awesome!!
We are staying at a place called Villa Romeo just at the top of a surf spot called bingin. Our accomidation is a nice simple little hut with everything you could possibly need, a bedroom and a bathroom!! No t.v, no noise (apart from the dogs) and hardly any people..... that cant be said for the surf!!!!
The surf has ranged from 2-5 foot. Surfed bingin most days, this is a nice little reef but the take off point is so small when there is more then 10 people it feels crowded and sometimes there has been 20 people in. The locals absoultely rip it apart , awesome to watch! Jimbo been getting some sick pits at really low tide but its pretty knarly with the reef almost dry!!!
We have also been surfing a really fun beachie called dreamlands, which has a really fun right and left peak. The sea is beautiful blue and the sand golden yellow but beware the locals on the beach, before you no it your collard into having a massage, and before you no it there are five pairs of hands on you all wanting money!!!!
We leave here on monday to go on a boat trip for a week with 'Doggy the man' hehe love the name, he owns the boat. This will take us all round lombok and sumbawa with about 7 or 8 new breaks to surf!
Well better get off now we are going to the Uluwatu Temple soon for some cultural activities. love to everyone at little green rock and on the little green rock speak soon guys.
Love Shell and Jimbo. xx

Ive got one more day of jersey left for a good long while!! woo hoo!!!! im am off traveling my fist stop is indo then oz, n.z, fiji, costa, nigaragua, panama, florida and then portugal. This is the trip of a life time for me is its going to allow me to persue my dreams and develope my surfing further and experience things i have only dreamed of. I am going to miss the jersey summer but not the lack of waves. I am going to miss my mam and my brother dearly but not the constant nagging, and i am also going to miss Debbie, Buter, Ollie and Savannah. I feel truely blessed to have met such a spriited, friendly and welcoming family and for that i thank you.

What a dumbass!

Here's how to go from cool to fool in less than a second:

You've got 30 minutes to get in a quick surf so you change into your wettie, grab your board and hotfoot it down to the beach. As you're running down the slip (I have found that the slip at La Braye is particularly suited to this) make sure you're not paying attention - If you can be talking to somebody as you're running down the slip it's even better - and place your foot sideways on a piece of granite. If you've done this properly you now have a very twisted ankle, next try to save the situation by pulling up and doing the hopping thing - now make sure you twist your knee the wrong way while you're doing the hopping.

If it is all going to plan you will no longer be able to support your own weight and since you've still got forward momentum your face should be approaching the slip at great speed; self preservation should now be taking over and you will launch your board out in front of you (crushing a rail and breaking off a fin, of course) as you try to protect your face.

If you've planned this move properly you will be near the edge of the slip and placed in perfect position to fall off the side of the slip, fracturing your toe in the process.

You will now be lying on the sand in a great deal of pain but trying to reclaim some sort of dignity by tring to assure the good samaritans that rushed to your aid that you are, in fact, okay and if they could just go about their business and forget what they have seen, that would be very kind. For a few bonus points make sure that your kids are building sand castles next to the slip so they can point at you and laugh.

Proving that ignorance should go hand in hand with piss poor coordination, insist on still going for your quick surf even though you can barely walk. The paddle out will be no problem, catching a wave will be relatively straight forward but as you pop up you will be reminded that standing hurts and that standing is a fairly important part of surfing these days. Instead of popping to your feet, doing your bottom turn and preparing for your top turn you should pop to your feet, feel the pain, yell something beginning with the letter 'F' fall back down thus completing a picture perfect 'Kook' manuever (highly underated IMHO).

Let the white water wash you to the beach and finish what can only be described as the gay-est surf in history.

Well done!

P.S. - to the guy with the big, red longboard: Thanks for not laughing too loudly.

P.P.S. - to Shelly: You can stop laughing now.

Too big for their britches?

I saw this article in the Times (I know, too much writing, not enough pretty pictures) a few days ago and it wound me up a little bit.

If you're not going to read this little article, I'll give you a quick summary - the soil association, the self appointed guardians of green, have proposed new guidelines for them to certify food as organic. The new guidelines would not recognize food as organic if it is air freighted to its destination.

The farmers who make their living by farming organically could lose their certification due to their main customers' method of delivery. What incentive is there for a farmer to continue to use organic methods if they are not going to receive the credit and the premium rate for their efforts?

The really silly bit is that this food is occupying cargo space in passenger aircraft that would otherwise remain empty or carry other cargo. The carbon footprint for a low density cargo such as food on an airplane that would be flying anyway is a very small step up from negligible.

Obviously all of us here at Little Green Rock applaud every effort to make an environmental change for the better but I think the soil association is doing more harm than good with this move.

We would love to hear your views on this.

New surf equation

We need a new way to factor wave size. I think that outside temperature, water temperature and time since last surfed should be factored in. Obviously the first two would be proportional and the third would be inversely proportional.

Since being cold is just a box you have to tick to surf in Jersey and the UK, we'll give the first 2 slightly less significance. Let's say water temperature below 15 degrees gets a factor of 1.2, below 10 gets a factor of 1.6 and below 5 gets a factor of 2. We can use the same scale for outside air temperature as well.

For time since last surfed we would have a minimum factor of 1, being 1 day since last surfed. For every day not surfed, we could increase the factor by .2.

So let's look at this formula in practice:

Todays wave height was 4 foot, the water temp is 10 degrees and the air temp is 9 degrees so:

Factored wave height = 4 / 1.2 / 1.5 = 2.23 ft. , not interested

But - I haven't surfed in 2 weeks = 14 days = factor of 3.26 so:

Factored wave height = 4 / 1.2 /1.5 * 3.26 = 7.24 ft. , on it!

Please use the above formula for quoting wave heights from now on so that I may better plan my day.

Cheers
